Hello and Welcome to MentalShavings.com

Every day, we’re confronted by thousands of messages imploring us to think or act in a certain way. Not just from marketers. But from our friends, colleagues and loved ones, too.

Why do some of those succeed, why do most fail miserably, and what does it tell us about how to get more done by communicating more persuasively?

That’s the stuff of strategic communications. That’s the stuff of Frank J. Oswald’s Mental Shavings. Weigh in with your comments. Or drop me a note at frank@frankoswald.com.

Was It Ethics—Or the Economy?

Everyone is buzzing about Kellogg’s decision to dump Olympic hero Michael Phelps.

But buried in those news stories is another fact: Kellogg has also elected not to renew its Olympic Team sponsorship, which expired in December 2008.

So I wonder if this decision is really about economics and not ethics?

In today’s economy, companies are looking to cut costs at every corner. Is it possible that Michael Phelps has already surpassed his Return-On- Endorsement value, especially if he decides not to compete in 2012?
